I have grown bored with my language, bored with my voice, bored with my writing. My words labour under the weight of Australia's history. The land itself, as much as I love it, bears down hard.

Now, in another place, I am finding lighter words. At times, I may not need to speak at all. I smile; I nod. Will you allow me?

In an important book for our times, Stan Grant one of Australia's most prominent writers on identity, nationhood and belonging reflects on how we struggle to speak to one another today, and the importance of listening, silence and philosophy, from Plato to Simone Weil to Radiohead.

Stan Grant is a proud Wiradjuri man, and the Vice Chancellor’s Chair of Australian-Indigenous Belonging at Charles Sturt University. In an exchange of personal letters, Volf and Wiman give voice to and validate the most pressing spiritual questions of our time. Close friends and Yale colleagues, they reveal through their letters visions of faith that are sometimes sharply divergent, yet always honest and punctuated by warmth, humor, and apology. The result is a vivid, consoling collection in which questions are dignified and the spiritual search in all its complexities is honored.

Whether they’re discussing Scripture’s most problematic texts, Christianity’s most preposterous claims, or their own experiences of God’s presence and absence, Volf and Wiman are united in their shared refusal to oversimplify the realities of human pain. Instead, we are invited to share an honest hope: While certainty can never be ours, perhaps God shows up in “glimmerings.” As we accompany each other in our tensions, we can find strength in solidarity, beauty in mystery, and love that persists even as our faith perplexes.

A tree that isn't there can't cast a shadow. Bertie is the new boy. His dad has spoilt him and that's not about to change: he wants all the shade for himself, and he is used to getting what he wants. Divisions quickly appear in the playground. But Maryam and her friends are not only feisty, they're resilient. They may not have access to sticks and stones, but they have forgiveness, something that is foreign to Bertie, who can't consider conciliation even when it is offered to him. A Tale of Two Trees is a story about playground bullying, but it is bigger than the playground. Addressing the enduring values of sharing, forgiveness and inclusion, it explores universal themes of social inequity, resource distribution, environmental vandalism, class division and culture, and is sure to stimulate lively discussion around dinner tables and in the classroom.
