Wingspan is a competitive, medium-weight, card-driven, engine-building board game from Stonemaier Games.
You are bird enthusiasts-researchers, bird watchers, ornithologists, and collectors-seeking to discover and attract the best birds to your aviary. Each bird extends a chain of powerful combinations in one of your habitats (actions). These habitats focus on several key aspects of growth:
- Gain food tokens via custom dice in a bird-feeder dice tower
- Lay eggs using egg miniatures in a variety of colours
- Draw from hundreds of unique bird cards and play them
The winner is the player with the most points after 4 rounds.

I love games, but especially ones that are different. This is only mildly competitive, with players having to make the most of the cards they are dealt and can get (how metaphorical!). It does have a learning curve - you will need a good few hours to play the game the first few times as there’s so many ways to score points. There’s lots of strategy, but some luck too. A game designed and illustrated by women, this has made bird-watchers out of gamers and gamers out of bird-watchers. You don’t have to know about birds to play, but you will learn about them. Can whole families play? Yup. If your kids love games and have some patience (!).
Be warned: This can be really addictive! You may stop watching TV and hang out with friends and family! This was in the top-ten games played worldwide during pandemic-related lockdowns. Highly recommend the expansion packs on European and Oceania birds (have to have the base game to use these).
