Papillon

First published in 1969 and filmed with Steve McQueen in the lead role, Henri Charrièreâ€s semi-autobiographical narrative recalls his wrongful conviction for murder in Paris, his transportation to a penal colony in French Guiana, and his daring escape in an open boat. He also describes his recapture and eight further bids for freedom, including one from the notorious Devilâ€s Island, before his final release to a new life in Venezuela.
